The story
Twenty years of digging holes in north Manchester
Scott started in groundworks - footings, drainage, kerbing, the unglamorous work under everything else - and moved into driveways because he kept being asked to fix ones that other people had laid on bad bases. That is still the way the business thinks. The surface is the last five per cent of the job. The other ninety-five is excavation, compaction, edging and drainage, and it is the bit we are good at because it is the bit we came from.
The limited company, S P Groundwork's & Driveways NW Limited, was set up in January 2024 to put the trade on a formal footing. The name, the phone number, the yard and the man on site have been the same for a lot longer than that. Most of our work is repeat business and word of mouth from the same streets in Alkrington, Langley, Hopwood, Heywood, Chadderton and Blackley, which is the only marketing we have ever really needed.

How we work
The rules we keep to on every job
We dig to the ground, not to the price
If a plot needs 250mm because the clay is soft, it gets 250mm. The depth goes on the quote and we do not shave it to win the job.
Edges before surface, always
Every restraint is bedded and haunched in concrete before a block, a flag or a load of tarmac goes anywhere near it.
Water has to go somewhere
We design the drainage first. Falls, channels, soakaways. A drive with no plan for water is a puddle with a paving pattern.
The quote is the price
Itemised and fixed. If we find something unexpected, you hear about it before we touch it, and we have usually priced for it already.
The road gets swept
Every evening. Skips are booked to arrive and leave on the days we said. Your neighbours should be curious, not annoyed.
We say no when it is right to
Resin over a cracked base, porcelain on dabs, a patio falling towards the door - if a job cannot be done properly for the money, we tell you rather than do it badly.
The guarantee
Every drive we lay in Middleton is put in writing
A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.
