Whitefield is ten minutes from us along the M60 and it is somewhere we have worked steadily for two decades. It is mainly a town of 1930s semis - long straight roads of them off Bury New Road and Radcliffe New Road - with the older Victorian villas of Stand around the church and All Saints, and a lot of newer housing towards Hollins and Unsworth. Most of the driveways we do here are the same story: a side drive laid for a Morris Minor being made wide enough for two modern cars, done properly from the base up.

About Whitefield
Whitefield grew along the turnpike between Manchester and Bury, and the older part of it is Stand, up on the hill around St Mary's church, where there are Georgian and Victorian houses in a conservation area. The great bulk of the town went up between the wars: semi-detached houses with bay windows, side drives and decent front gardens across Besses o' th' Barn, Hillock, Park Lane and the roads either side of Bury New Road. There is also postwar estate housing towards Hollins and Unsworth and a scatter of newer builds on infill sites. With the Metrolink at Whitefield and Besses, on-street parking has become a problem, which is why off-road parking is the main reason people call us.
The ground is glacial clay over Coal Measures, with the land falling towards the Irwell at Ringley and Stand. Clay soils here shrink in a dry summer and swell in a wet winter, and a lot of the original 1930s concrete drives have cracked along the movement lines. Whitefield gets around 900mm of rain a year. Everything we lay is on a base deep enough to bridge that movement and drained so water does not sit under the surface.

Why us in Whitefield
“Cracked 1930s concrete is the starting point for more than half of the Whitefield driveways we replace.”

The guarantee
A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.

How we work
Most of what goes wrong with a drive goes wrong in steps three to five, which is why they are the ones we spend the longest on.
Scott comes out, measures up, looks at what is under the existing surface and how the ground drains. On Whitefield clay that visit is where the real decisions get made.
Excavation depth, sub-base spec, edging, drainage and the surface all listed with a fixed total. The price on the paper is the price you pay.
The old surface comes out completely. We dig to the depth the ground needs - never less than 150mm of MOT Type 1 for a drive - and compact it in layers with a plate or roller.
Kerbs, block edging or aluminium trims are bedded and haunched in concrete before anything is laid, so the finished surface cannot spread or rock.
Linear channels, gullies and soakaways go in now, with falls set so water leaves the surface and stays inside your boundary as the rules require.
Screeded sand and machine-cut block, hot-rolled tarmac, hand-trowelled resin or floated and stamped concrete - laid by the same crew that did the groundwork.
We walk the job with you, sweep and sand-in or seal as the surface needs, take the waste away and hand over the ten-year written guarantee before we leave.

Out and about
Block paving can be walked on straight away, but resin needs a day and tarmac wants an afternoon. Three good reasons to be out of the house.

FAQ
Usually not. Bury Council is the planning authority and the national rule applies - a front drive of any size is fine without an application if the surface is permeable or the water drains to a lawn, border or soakaway on your own land. The exception is the Stand conservation area around the church and listed houses, where the council may want to approve materials. We check before we quote.
Yes, this is the job we do most in Whitefield. We take out the old drive and the strip of garden beside it, rebuild the base across the whole width, set new edging in concrete and lay the new surface as one piece so there is no visible join. If the existing dropped kerb is too narrow we apply to Bury Council to extend it.
Almost certainly ground movement. The clay under Whitefield swells and shrinks with the seasons, and a thin concrete slab laid straight onto it with no base cannot bridge that. Once it cracks, water gets under it and the pieces start to rock. The answer is to remove it and rebuild on a compacted Type 1 base, which is what we do rather than overlaying.
A two-car drive takes three to five working days. You will need to park on the road for that time, and we let you know exactly which days. Block paving can be driven on 24 to 48 hours after laying, resin bound after about three days, tarmac the next day once it has cooled.
