Oldham is one of the highest towns in England - the centre sits around 200 metres up - and it is one of the wettest urban areas too. That combination shapes almost every driveway we build here. Plots slope, water runs, and frost gets into anything laid badly. From our base in Middleton we are twenty minutes from most of the borough, and over the years we have laid drives and patios in Werneth, Coppice, Watersheddings, Moorside and out towards Lees and the Saddleworth villages.

Scott usually rings back the same working day.
About Oldham
Oldham's housing is stacked up the hillsides in rows. The classic stock is stone and brick terraces from the cotton years, especially around Glodwick, Coppice, Werneth and Hollinwood, many with steep front gardens and back yards that have never been used properly. Higher up and further out - Moorside, Sholver, Watersheddings, Austerlands - there are bigger interwar and postwar semis and detached homes with real gardens, and the Saddleworth villages of Uppermill, Delph and Dobcross have stone cottages and conservation areas where materials matter. There is also a lot of postwar council housing around Fitton Hill, Limeside and Holts where concrete drives from the 1960s are at the end of their life.
Geologically the town sits on Millstone Grit and Coal Measures with glacial clay over the lower ground. The gritstone is why so many of the older houses are built in stone, and it is why hillside plots often have rock not far below the surface, which affects excavation. Oldham gets roughly 1,200mm of rain a year and a good deal more frost than Manchester, so freeze-thaw damage on cheap surfaces is common. A drive here needs a deeper base, better drainage and a surface that will not spall when the water in it freezes.

Why us in Oldham
“Frost damage is the reason for close to half the Oldham driveway replacements we quote for.”

The guarantee
A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.

How we work
Most of what goes wrong with a drive goes wrong in steps three to five, which is why they are the ones we spend the longest on.
Scott comes out, measures up, looks at what is under the existing surface and how the ground drains. On Oldham clay that visit is where the real decisions get made.
Excavation depth, sub-base spec, edging, drainage and the surface all listed with a fixed total. The price on the paper is the price you pay.
The old surface comes out completely. We dig to the depth the ground needs - never less than 150mm of MOT Type 1 for a drive - and compact it in layers with a plate or roller.
Kerbs, block edging or aluminium trims are bedded and haunched in concrete before anything is laid, so the finished surface cannot spread or rock.
Linear channels, gullies and soakaways go in now, with falls set so water leaves the surface and stays inside your boundary as the rules require.
Screeded sand and machine-cut block, hot-rolled tarmac, hand-trowelled resin or floated and stamped concrete - laid by the same crew that did the groundwork.
We walk the job with you, sweep and sand-in or seal as the surface needs, take the waste away and hand over the ten-year written guarantee before we leave.

Out and about
Block paving can be walked on straight away, but resin needs a day and tarmac wants an afternoon. Three good reasons to be out of the house.

FAQ
For most houses, no. Oldham Council follows the national permitted development rules, so a front drive of any size is fine without an application as long as it is permeable or drains to a lawn, border or soakaway on your own land. The borough does have a lot of conservation areas - Saddleworth in particular - and plenty of listed buildings, and in those the council may want to approve materials. We will tell you before we quote if your address is affected.
Most Oldham plots have a fall of some kind. If the drop is modest we regrade the drive to a safe gradient and put a channel at the low end. If it is steeper we build a retaining wall and create a level parking area, often with steps to the door. Anything above about one in eight is unpleasant in ice, so we design to keep the parking pad as flat as the plot allows.
The base matters more than the surface, but of the surfaces, resin bound stone and dense clay block paving cope best because water does not sit in them. Tarmac is fine if it is laid hot, rolled properly and drained. What fails in frost is any surface with water trapped in or under it - thin concrete, cheap imprint work that was never sealed, and drives with no fall.
Yes. We work across the whole of Oldham borough including Uppermill, Delph, Dobcross, Greenfield, Lees, Springhead and Shaw, as well as Chadderton, Royton and Failsworth, which each have their own page.
