Driveways In Royton

Is your Royton driveway cracked, sunken or just not big enough?

New block paved, resin and tarmac driveways and stone patios across Royton, Thorp, Heyside, Haggate and Dogford

Royton is just over Tandle Hill from Middleton, so we are on site there in a quarter of an hour. It is a town with a real mix of property - Victorian terraces around the centre and Rochdale Road, big interwar semis on the Thorp and Heyside side, and stone-built older houses higher up towards Shaw. It also sits at the point where the Pennine weather starts in earnest, so a driveway or patio here has to be built to shed a lot of water and take a hard frost.

About Royton

Driveways and patios built for Royton houses and Royton ground

Royton was a cotton town and the pattern of housing follows the mills. The centre and the streets off Rochdale Road, Middleton Road and Oldham Road are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many with front gardens that owners want to convert into parking now that on-street space is tight. Thorp, Heyside and Haggate have wide roads of 1930s semis with driveways that were laid for one car, and around Dogford Park and towards Tandle Hill there are larger detached homes with proper gardens. Higher up, on the way to Shaw and Crompton, the houses are older and stone-built, and the plots are steeper.

The ground is Coal Measures - clay, shale and thin sandstone - with a lot of glacial clay on the lower ground near the Beal. Royton is high enough to get real winters, with more frost days than Manchester and rainfall well over 1,000mm a year. That is why so many older drives here have spalled, cracked and sunk: they hold water, the water freezes, and the surface lifts. The fix is not a fancier surface, it is a deeper base and proper drainage under whatever surface you choose.

Why us in Royton

What a driveway in Royton gets from a Middleton firm

  • ✓Sub-bases dug deeper than the norm on clay plots and compacted in layers, because a shallow base is what makes Royton drives sink
  • ✓Frost-resistant surfaces - dense clay block, sealed printed concrete and resin bound with a UV-stable binder - laid so water cannot sit in them
  • ✓Terrace fronts near the centre converted to parking with the dropped kerb applied for through Oldham Council
  • ✓Sloping plots on the Shaw side handled with retaining walls and level parking pads instead of a gradient you cannot use in ice
  • ✓Fifteen minutes from Middleton, so visits are quick and the foreman can be back on site the same day if you need him
Before and after: Back lawn to grey porcelain by S P Groundworks & Driveways - the kind of job we do across Royton

“Most of the sunken driveways we replace in Royton turn out to have been laid on less than 100mm of hardcore.”

The guarantee

Every drive we lay in Royton is put in writing

A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.

  • Sub-base depth and compaction stated on the quote, not left to chance
  • Edging set in concrete so the surface cannot spread or rock
  • Settlement, sinking or lifting caused by our work put right free
  • Materials backed by the manufacturer on top of our own cover

How we work

Seven steps to a driveway in Royton that stays flat

Most of what goes wrong with a drive goes wrong in steps three to five, which is why they are the ones we spend the longest on.

  1. Free site visit

Scott comes out, measures up, looks at what is under the existing surface and how the ground drains. On Royton clay that visit is where the real decisions get made.

  2. Written, itemised quote

Excavation depth, sub-base spec, edging, drainage and the surface all listed with a fixed total. The price on the paper is the price you pay.

  3. Excavation and sub-base

The old surface comes out completely. We dig to the depth the ground needs - never less than 150mm of MOT Type 1 for a drive - and compact it in layers with a plate or roller.

  4. Edge restraints

Kerbs, block edging or aluminium trims are bedded and haunched in concrete before anything is laid, so the finished surface cannot spread or rock.

  5. Drainage and falls

Linear channels, gullies and soakaways go in now, with falls set so water leaves the surface and stays inside your boundary as the rules require.

  6. Laying the driveway

Screeded sand and machine-cut block, hot-rolled tarmac, hand-trowelled resin or floated and stamped concrete - laid by the same crew that did the groundwork.

  7. Handover and guarantee

We walk the job with you, sweep and sand-in or seal as the surface needs, take the waste away and hand over the ten-year written guarantee before we leave.

  8. Want to see the steps on a real job? The projects page has every one of them photographed on the day we finished.

FAQ

Driveway questions from Royton

Will I need planning permission for a driveway in Royton?

For most houses, no. Oldham Council is the planning authority for Royton and the national permitted development rules apply: a front drive is fine without an application if it is permeable or drains into your own garden or a soakaway. We build to that standard on every job. If you are in a conservation area or the house is listed, the council may want to approve materials, and we will tell you before we quote.

Why do driveways in Royton crack so often?

Frost, mostly. Royton is high and cold enough to get a lot more freeze-thaw cycles than the city, and any drive that holds water in the surface or the base will crack when that water freezes. The usual culprits are thin concrete, cheap imprint work that was never sealed, and drives with no fall so water sits on them. A deep compacted base and proper drainage stop it happening.

How much does a driveway cost in Royton?

Tarmac starts from around £45 per square metre, block paving from £60, resin bound from £70 and printed concrete from £65, all including excavation, the sub-base and edging. Sloping plots that need retaining walls cost more, and we price those on a site visit. Every quote is written and fixed.

Do you work in Shaw and Crompton as well?

Yes. We cover the whole of the north of Oldham borough from Middleton - Royton, Shaw, Crompton, Higher Crompton, Heyside, Thorp and Haggate - and Oldham, Chadderton and Failsworth each have their own page.
